Ielts British Council Vs AEO Which Is Better For Pakistani Students?

by Young Aspirations on May 13th, 2010

A lot of Revenue is generated by the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in Pakistan.

IELTS is basically an International English Language Test that is arranged by two examination bodies in Pakistan British Council and AEO (Australian Education Organization).

AEO have a good reputation in Pakistan. They are really popular among the students in Pakistan due to being just with the students.

Well The Current Circumstances in Pakistan are making it difficult to survive in Pakistan. A lot of People are applying to study at a university abroad or are applying for an immigration.

To be able to get a Visa Acceptance IELTS is mandatory and IELTS is the qualification required to seek admission in any foreign University.

A lot of Students apply for an IELTS Test. As a lot of Students are familiar that there are Four Modules in the IELTS Test Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

A lot of students are really dubious on what to choose. They are very much worried about their future so they are really cautious in selecting the examination body through which they will attempt  the test.

For Pakistani Students although teachers say that both British council and AEO are the same but honestly speaking there is a vast difference. These teachers have not attempted this IELTS test themselves so they guide their students in a wrong way.

Two Modules Listening and Reading are the same in both AEO and British council as there is an answer key to questions which is followed by examiners.

The remaining two modules Writing and Speaking have a wide marking difference. British council of Pakistan is really strict and tries its level best to restrict the students in a band score of 6.5.

They award 5.0 Overall Band score when the Candidate deserves a lot more then that. Accidentally if some one like a really  Qualified Doctor or some big Business man sits in the test They award 7 or 7.5 overall Band just to maintain their egoistic attitude.

On the Other Hand AEO is very good in this case. Their Examiners are fresh and try their level best to pump a candidate perform well. A lot of students achieve an overall band score of 8.5 in AEO while on average if you are awarded overall 5.0 Band score in Ielts by British council you could easily achieve 6.5 or even 7 in AEO.

The Speaking test organized by British council is really weird. They have old ladies who are really egoistic and are extremely rude. They try their level best to confuse a candidate. On the other hand the Speaking examiners of AEO are young and really of good mood. They smile at intervals and treat the Candidates as their Friend.  This ambience in the Speaking Test really releases a lot of exam pressure from the candidate and so the Candidate performs well and achieves minimum 6.0 Band in Speaking Test and Maximum could be 8.5 but on average Students secure 7.0 Band in AEO Speaking Test.

When it comes to writing British council Examiners are not in a mood to do justice with the candidates. They try their level best to award a Band score less then 5.0 in Writing to restrict Candidate score.

AEO have good marking criteria and they try to award genuine marks to a candidate who is appearing into the test.

British council charges Rs 10,000 PKR  for the test while AEO charges Rs 13000 Pakistani Rupees for the test. Students have direct access to AEO offices while British Council only corresponds through some branches of Standard Chartered Bank in Pakistan.

British Council has just one plus point that they provide wireless headphones for Listening that is good for Candidates.

My verdict to students will be to choose AEO for IELTS in Pakistan if they want to utilize their potential or go to British Council if you want injustice to be done with you.

    @Zeeshan
How much did u score in IELTS?

  • Sarmad Ali

I agree with Zeeshan. I too appeared twice in IELTS from British Council. In the first atempt I got very good band in Listening. But they are quite unjustice with the students in writing and speaking. I got 6 in writing and 6 in speaking. My writing was very good. But in Speaking i made some mistakes like I spoke 1 or 2 words in local language accidentaly. I thought it was due to those mistakes that i couldn’t get good band in speaking.

But when I appeared 2nd time from british council it have come to me that their interviewers are very narrow minded. My interviewer don’t give good band to students. My interview was excellent and gave all answers according to the questions. I never hesitate on any question. My que card turn was very good, and I spoke very flently. I was expecting more than 7 band. But i got only 6. Lots of my friends who appeared in interview with the same interviewer also have the same complaints. British council is not willing to pay attention to students complaints and will not change their interviewers. I strongly recomment people not to give IELTs from British council.

  • waqas khan

yeh i agree with this because i have given ielts two times one from AEO.I scored 7.5 in writting and 7.0 in speaking ……how ever in British council i have scored 5.5 in writting….now there comes the difference…so in my view whoever wants to give Ielts go for AEO….

British council is very soft with their candidates and no strict marking .
u wrote wrong and british council is best choice of students.specially in speaking test british council is best for good behaviour and for their softness on the other hand the A.E.O is very difficult speaking test and they confuse and puzzle the candidate.certainlly.

You can Apply Anywhere you want to because both AEO and British Council IELTS Degree is same

  • Syed Mustafa Shah

Although i applied through british council and got a band of 6.5, where i deserved more. I agree that British Council is biassed, where they compel students to donate 12000, every three months. AEO is an option to select.

  • Muhammad

For your Information, Recently AEO got the excellence performance award this year. You wrote AEO stand for Australian Education Organization which is wrong, Actully AEO stand for Australian Education office.People who want to appear through AEO, can visit “AEO” website.Very easy process for the registration through AEO.

I totally agree what my friend has said above. AEO is much much better than british council. British are bit harsh awarding scores. Avoid them at all costs.

I think the writer is absolutely correct.British council also makes you cry for your result i.e., no online result and 3rd class corier system.

  • Nazia

thank you for providing with such ample information !~

  • Nurgulchik1703

Yes, i absolutely agree with above mentioned view. I myself had twice given IELTS by BRITISH one and got overall 6.
but on 3rd time i tried AEO and got overall=7. but speaking was 8 while on British one i got 7 on 1st from Lahore, and 2nd from Islamabad even worse-6 band only.
AEO karachi-i got speaking 8, and lady wasn’t so young but very nice, friendly, smiling.
British Islamabad was very serious man, he didn’t like me, somehow, and gave lowest band.
    better choose AEO!!

  • Mateen

    Its Mateen.
Well. thanks for mentioning the above mentioned facts, Infact, they are very useful and woul help a great deal the students who have confusion regarding this exam.
Hope to be recieving the same useful information in the future as well

  • Ofmoria

you are right about everything except that most of the speaking examiners are rude but not all. My brother had one who just kept sitting there like a peace of meat with no expressions at all. The one I had however was a very pleasant grandma type lady and I actually had fun during the test :)
I’m only 17 and still got 7.0 in B.C IELTS so i guess i should be proud :D . It was mostly because of listening and readin 8.5 and 7.5 respectively. They couldn’t deduct marks in those sections but they sure did their ‘duty’ by giving me 6 in writing -i was expecting 7.5 at the VERY least. DAMN them !. I could have easily gotten 8overall in AEO. Damn my misfortune :(

  • http://www.risedream.com/blog/ Rise Dream.Com

I secured 7.0 Band in IELTS from British Council and secured 8.5 in listening and 7.5 in reading and 6 in writing. It seems British council treats skillful and diligent candidates in the same manner.

I can not agree with the Pakistani student statement that” The Teachers have not attempted this IELTS test them selves so they guide” because I am one of the Faulty who teaches IELTS to students who wants to go AEO, British Council and in both student got 7 to 8 bands. Because i will do all tests and mark in the book and then only teach. Further i my self justify i should get 9 bands in all tests then only i will teach the student. It may be true in Pakistani side and not in India and i strongly condom no teacher will do it.I am having 6 books in each types of A E / British Council and teach. In addition i use to teach the GRAMMAR, pronunciation, Spelling mistakes avoiding.fluency, Good hand writing,Debates, Discussion every things in 60 hours only.If any body wants help from me i can teach by on line and my e mail I D Josepheden81@yahoo.com, Face book, Orkut, Gmail, Skype too.

Sir this is false propaganda against Pakistani Students and Pakistani teachers. You should do some research and then you will get to know that we have got immense talent in Pakistan and all the top positions throughout the world are occupied by Pakistani’s who have settled abroad. Pakistan is full of resources and we Pakistani’s are the biggest resource of Pakistan but due to poor political system some people are spreading wrong and fake things against Pakistan. I appreciate your words that you work hard in teaching your students but let me tell you Pakistani teachers and students are ahead of you and we can even beat the native English speakers when it comes to competition. Eliminate all rubbish about Pakistan from your mind and always think Pakistan is the Best this is the reality the sooner you acknowledge it is better for you.

  • Irfan_swabi401

HyDear I am irfan from Peshawar Pakistan. Let me know what difference you feel in IELTS test while giving from Islamabad and Karachi and Lahore.Plz Plzzzz I am looking forward. I will be thankful

  • http://www.risedream.com/blog/ Rise Dream.Com

Well it does not matter which city you are attempting test. I suggest you to attempt the test where you are living or the nearest city to your main residence.

  • Zeeshan

i wish to learnt somthing new from u as i m going to appear for the test help me

  • Afaq Ali

i feel after reading the blogs, listening and reading test in british council is easy as comparto A.E.O
most of the student got more than 6.5 band in reading and listening,
and they are little bit tuff in writing and speaking ,which i think its depend on the candidate ability
what do you think about it…?

  • http://www.risedream.com/blog/ Rise Dream.Com

I agree the IELTS test depends on candidate preparation and luck on the test date. If it is the day of the candidate he can score well. British council and AEO are almost the same except AEO is a bit more friendly and awards even students who have the ability but are unable to deliver in harsh exam circumstances. I think we have to pray to Allah Almighty for succeeding in the exams with high scores before attempting any exam. May Allah guide the way of us Pakistani’s and Muslims towards success.

  • http://www.risedream.com/blog/ Rise Dream.Com

A person who has gone through this situation may be better able to answer this question. I think a person is deported only if he engages in any offense, performs badly in studies or is staying illegally in any other country. IELTS should not be an issue because university will not give admission to the person having no IELTS certificate

  • muhammad tahir

Hafiz Tahir… U provided the best solution which i really need. so could u explain me for the Aus life how is that? and plz differ frm aus and eng students life so who is better place for Pakistanis student who has to earn first then study, living expense, saving etc….
what about  easy immigration and secure future?   Thanks a lot..

  • http://www.risedream.com/blog/ Rise Dream.Com

I would recommend you to go for IELTS from British council if you secure 80%+ marks in your academic career, But if you score less then i recommend you to take tuition from AEO itself. AEO also offers IELTS tuition to candidates you can call AEO to ask them about their fee structure. On 5th 2011 September start attempting mock exams of IELTS fro reading writing and speaking. I recommend you to purchase a paper book or search for free ebooks on internet for “cambridge IELTS 5″ and “Cambridge IELTS 6″. attempt all the exercises in the book at least 5 times under strict exam conditions before appearing in the test this will improve your chances of securing a high band in IELTS exam.

  • Mushailahmad

I will agree with this statement because i will done it. British council is just a fake with students.Prefer AEO only
