How to Troubleshoot a Computer that is not turning on

We all know about the worst situation that can arise when your computer does not boot and there may be several reasons why this can happen including the fact that your CPU or motherboard needs to be replaced.

These parts are very expensive to replace, but before going for extreme solutions, one could give the following tweaks a try.

The following solutions work regardless of the operating system, including Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows XP.

Commonly the main reason could be a hardware failure but probably not a hard drive error, so one needs not to worry as the files and documents are secure on the hard drive as soon as the problem is figured out.

No Sign of Power

If a computer shows no sign of receiving power, with no display lights turned on or the fan running when you turn it on, make sure that you do not have a power supply problem.

Check the main power surge as well as the power switches on the computer, both front and back of the computer. Check the power to your UPS, surge protector as well as the power switch on power strip. Verify the input voltage as well as possible unplugged or loose cables. It is not common, but the front power button of the computer can also fail and can be the cause, so it is easy to check it. Trace the wires to the pins on the motherboard and check it with a multi-meter, but take care not to contact other pins nearby.

You could also test a power supply unit itself in the computer. Be careful though if you decide to do it manually as it involves working with high voltage while it is plugged in.
